Barenaked Ladies

Compiled by Jack Foley

THEY’RE one of Canada’s finest exports but they’re always thinking of new ways of getting their fans involved around the globe. Here’s some of the latest developments from Barenaked Ladies…

1) Barnaked Ladies have released two albums in just six months through their own imprint label Desperation Records.

2) The band are focused on connecting to their fans in new ways. The first album, Barenaked Ladies Are Me, was released in October 2006 in multiple formats – CD, various digital formats, via USB and vinyl. Fans were even able to download stems of each track and remix the whole album.

3) Barenaked Ladies were one of the first bands to sign up to Nettwerk’s ‘New Artist Model’ which has led to the unique way they’re releasing music. They’ve already seen a rise in incremental revenue generating just under $100,000 in the first week of releasing Barenaked Ladies Are Me.

4) The second album, Barenaked Ladies Are Men, is being released on February 12, 2007, and will once again be released in various formats.

5) 6,000 limited edition double-packs containing all 29 tracks from the two albums will be made available to buy from March 2007. Half will be sold on the forthcoming tour and the remainder through retail. They will also be offered at a special discounted price to the band’s core fanbase and street team.

6) The band’s first UK tour in three years kicks off on Marhc 28 and will run until April 10, 2007. The tour includes a gig at London’s Hammersmith Apollo on March 30.

7) Barenaked Ladies continue to offer music in ground breaking formats whether it be releasing their albums via multi-platform models or offering live recordings of their gigs for purchase on USB sticks (as in the US, fans will have the opportunity to buy a live recording of that night’s show on USB before leaving the venue after each date on the tour).

8) Fans continue to play a big part in the band’s success – remixing tunes, creating T-shirts through crowd sourcing sites such as www.threadless.com and participating in music videos.

9) The band has even arranged a boat cruise around Florida for 2007! Dubbed Ship & Dip, the trip will offer fans the chance to party with Barenaked Ladies and enjoy some exclusive performances.

10) And it doesn’t stop there… a UK Microsite willl be created for the forthcoming tour to bring the band even closer to their fans – and the fans to each other. There’ll be photo blogs from the band and fans along with exclusive prizes and the opportunity for memories of gigs to be shared and MySpace friends to be made…
