Bratz: The Movie OST - Review
Review by Jack Foley
IF THE excruciating soundtrack is anything to go by then Bratz: The Movie is definitely one to avoid! Packed with a veritable who’s who of pop bands to avoid, this is a cheesy excursion through everything that’s depressing about popular music.
What’s more, it goes on and on and on. There are 21 tracks to navigate, which suggests immediately that the film isn’t based on a quality screenplay but rather montages, ditziness and girl power.
Perhaps it’s because I’m an adult male writing this, and therefore the wrong demographic entirely, but you have to struggle to find a decent record among the ‘songs’ on offer.
Added publicity is certain to stem from the fact that the Black Eyed Peas are present with a track called Express Yourself – but it conforms to turgid pop values. While Ashlee Simpson bids for some career revival opportunity with the frankly tedious Invisible.
Prima J, meanwhile, are a new act comprised of two cousins (Jessica and Janelle Martinez) who happen to have landed the lead track from the movie in the form of the similarly bland Rock Star.
Those tracks pass for the highlights. The lowpoints ceom from songs like Fabulous, Bratitude and onerous power ballads like Saying Goodbye and If This Is Goodbye. But the less said about them, the better. It’s being kind.
Bratz The Movie opens in UK cinemas on August 17 and could well emulate the success of its TV series. But unless you’re a pre-teen girl with a penchant for make-up, phrases like “whatever” and “that’s so cool” and cheesy pop records like The Spice Girls and Girls Aloud used to put out, then avoid this like the plague!
