Brit Awards 2017: David Bowie among nominees

Black Star, David Bowie

Story by Jack Foley

THE late David Bowie has landed two nominations at the 2017 Brit Awards.

The singer, who passed away last year following a short battle with cancer, received posthumous nominations for best British male and best album, for his haunting swansong Blackstar.

Other nominees at this year’s awards include Craig David, Michael Kiwanuka, Little Mix and Skepta.

Skepta has three nominations in total, with nods for best British male singer, best breakthrough and best album. While girl band Little Mix also have three – including best group and best single, for their song Shout Out To My Ex.

In the international categories, Beyonce and her younger sister Solange Knowles are both up for best international female, after releasing albums about race and politics last year.

This year’s nominations list has so far been praised for offering up a more diverse selection of awards contenders, following last year’s row over the lack of diversity when BAME (black, Asian and minority ethnic) artists were absent from all but the international categories.

Two awards that are presented before the ceremony include the Brits Critics’ Choice and the Icon Award. The former will go to blues singer Rag ‘N’ Bone Man, while the latter will be presented to Robbie Williams.

This year’s awards ceremony will take place at London’s O2 Arena on Wednesday, February 22. Little Mix, Emeli Sande and The 1975 will all perform, with further acts to be announced in due course.

Singer Michael Buble is due to host – but it is unclear whether he will be able to fulfil the role after his son was diagnosed with cancer last year.
