Capital FM Summertime Ball 2009: Lionel Ritchie and Blue on bill

Lionel Ritchie

Story by Jack Foley

LIONEL Ritchie, newly reformed boy band Blue and rapper Akon are among the stars taking part in this year’s Capital FM’s Summertime Ball in London on June 7, 2009.

They will be joined by former X-Factor winner Leona Lewis, Calvin Harris, Shontelle, The Saturdays and Kelly Clarkson at the Emirates Stadium (home of Arsenal FC).

As in previous years, 95.8 Capital FM will make a donation of £100,000 to Help a London Child from the proceeds of the Summertime Ball. Tickets, which are now available, start from £45 and include a booking fee. Blue Circle seats cost £70.

While the Summertime Ball traditionally brings big acts, the most news-worthy are reformed boy band Blue, who will perform for the first time since parting ways in 2005.

The foursome, fronted by Simon Webbe, enjoyed numerous chart hits including All Rise and U Make Me Wanna, although they’ve refused to confirm whether their reunion will lead to new material.

All four members – Webbe, Duncan James, Lee Ryan and Antony Costa – have had solo careers since the band split, with Webbe scoring two hit albums.

James, meanwhile, has appeared in London’s West End in long-running production Chicago and is set to appear in Legally Blonde.

He told Capital Radio: “We met up last week and decided we will definitely be doing something together as a group this summer.” He predicted “a fantastic show”.

Lionel Ritchie, meanwhile, also predicted plenty of spectacle and fun at the annual event, during which he’ll play some of his biggest hits, including Hello and Dancing On The Ceiling.
