Coldplay secure first UK number one single

Story by Jack Foley

COLDPLAY have topped the UK singles chart for the first time in their history with Viva la Vida, the title track from their new album.

Incredibly, the band – fronted by Chris Martin – have repeatedly missed out on the top spot despite having recorded some of the most timeless and popular tracks of recent years.

Songs like Yellow and Speed of Sound both missed out with the band even having to play second fiddle to the Crazy Frog on one occasion!

But they seem to have found even more fans with the release of their fourth LP, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, which is also currently top of the albums chart and one of the fastest selling records of all-time.

What’s more impressive is that Viva La Vida‘s chart-topping success has been attributed solely to downloads from the internet, as no hard copies are yet on sale, according to HMV.

Coldplay’s success hasn’t just been confined to UK shores either. On Thursday (June 19, 2008), the four-piece scored their first US number one single and also topped the US albums chart.
