Dionne Warwick - Now (Review)

Dionne Warwick, Now

Review by Jack Foley

IndieLondon Rating: 3 out of 5

DIONNE Warwick celebrates 50 years along with The Rolling Stones and James Bond. She’s in good company!

As part of those anniversary celebrations, she has decided to release a celebration album, Now. But rather than a straight-forward retrospective spanning her career (which began with 1962’s Don’t Make Me Over) she has opted for something that also challenges her.

Hence, she decided to poll her colleagues, her peers and her fans as to which songs should receive a 2012 makeover.

In the process, she discovered that everyone has a different favourite Warwick song. Some chose her classic Burt Bacharach and Hal David hits such as (There’s) Always Something There To Remind Me, while others – including a fellow superstar – even got in on the act… Stevie Wonder encouraged Dionne to revisit her 1965 song Are You There With Another Girl.

Furthermore, Dionne decided to also tackle two new [to her] songs each by the men who helped bring her voice to the world.

Allowing Bacharach and David to choose the songs themselves, she subsequently gets to lend her silky smooth vocals to Bacharach’s Love Is Still The Answer and new single Is There Anybody Out There? and David’s It Was Almost Like A Song and 99 Miles From LA.

The ensuing album is a treat for Warwick fans and goes some way to helping newcomers realise why she’s been able to stand the test of time so well. Her voice dazzles.

The composition of the tracks is, perhaps, the only real stumbling block in that it is very much a Radio 2 style production. It’s accomplished without really doing anything to surprise and roll back the years.

That said, her take on (There’s) Always Something There To Remind Me is pure Bacharach and breezes along nicely enough, a revised version of Don’t Make Me Over is pure class, there’s a gentle, reflective beauty to 99 Miles From LA and a fantastic duet to round things off with I Say A Little Prayer.

Fans will lap it up. But if we’re being anniversary poopers, perhaps we could have expected just that little bit more to give it extra sparkle.
