DJ MEHDI, the French electro producer signed to Ed Banger Records, has died at the age of 34 following a freak accident at his home.

According to reports taken from French media and Twitter, DJ Mehdi suffered a fatal injury following a fall from a roof.

The tragic news comes just days ago he wowed audiences at Bestival with a set he performed together with fellow DJ Henry Riton under their Carte Blanche guise.

He was also part of Club 75, a DJ supergroup that also includes Cassius, Busy P and Xavier de Rosnay from Justice, a fellow label-mate.

An official statement released by Ed Banger/Because Music said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our friend DJ Mehdi. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.”

Twitter, meanwhile, is filled with tributes from friends and colleagues. Among them is one from Groove Armada, which said said: “One of the loveliest men I have ever met. Massive condolences to his family.”

And Canadian soul duo Chromeo, who had previously worked with Mehdi on the track I Am Somebody, said: “We lost our brother. No words.”

French hip-hop/dance producer DJ Mehdi began his career on the underground Parisian hip-hop scene but, after working his way up to premier producer status, he linked up with French electro-house DJ/producer Pedro Winter (aka Busy P), whose label, Ed Banger Records, rose to international prominence with acts like Mr. Oizo and Justice.

One of his biggest hits was the 2007 single I Am Somebody, which enjoyed success on both sides of the Atlantic, but he was equally well-known for his remixes for the likes of Architecture in Daft Punk, Helsinki, New Young Pony Club and Miike Snow.

Born Mehdi Favéris-Essadi on January 20 1977, Mehdi first came to prominence as a former disc jockey of the groups Different Teep (ex-group of Manu Key & Lil Jahson), Ideal J and former member of the collective the Mafia K’1 Fry.

But as his reputation began to grow, so too did his output and as well as remixing various electronic acts he composed soundtracks for many French and international films before breaking out on his own.

He passed away on Tuesday, September 13, following the freak accident at his home.
