DJ Mehdi - Lucky Boy At Night

DJ Mehdi, Lucky Boy At Night

Review by Jack Foley

IndieLondon Rating: 3 out of 5

IN November 2006, Ed Banger Records released their very first album, Lucky Boy by DJ Mehdi. Since then things have changed significantly…

DJ Mehdi, alongside his label buddies Justice, Sebastian and Busy P, have shaken up clubland! Frenchman Mehdi, in particular, has tried to inject a healthy dose of soul, backbone and disco fever into the scene and original version of Lucky Boy, I Am Somebody, Signature and Wee Bounce have helped to form the soundtrack to some of the hottest parties of the past six months.

Mehdi’s appeal is such that when Ed Banger threw their fourth birthday party in Paris in March, 1,000 party animals crammed into the Espace Pierre Cardin and rocked out till the very early morning.

Determined to capitalise on this growing success, Ed Banger felt it was right to celebrate these night-time antics with the release of the remastered Lucky Boy At Night, features (until now) exclusive mixes, new tracks, a new tracklisting and a whole host of names worth dropping!

Remixes and edits come from Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter (his first in ages!!), NYC producer Kenny Dope, Switch, Outlines and DJ Mehdi himself.

There’s a new Lucky Girl version of the title track for the girlie-girls, which features Mehdi’s very own loved one Fafi on lead vocals, as well as new track Survivol which has been slaying crowds in Mehdi’s club sets!

The result is a lively showcase of Mehdi’s skills that’s certain to arrive as an absolute gift for his ever-growing fanbase. But it’s also fairly hit and miss.

Some of the tracks are definite dancefloor fillers, such as Hot-O-Momo and the original version of Lucky Boy with its lively guitar licks.

But others are a little too bland, trancey or club-scene generic. There’s also something very French and occasionally very ’80s surrounding a lot of the beats and electronics that adds little to the recent revival.

Dance fans may lap it up, and the album may bring Mehdi an even greater following, but unlike Groove Armada’s latest (released on the same day) this is one to be approached with caution rather than an embrace.
