Duffy tops UK singles chart

Duffy

Story by Jack Foley

HOTLY-tipped soul singer Duffy has topped the UK singles chart with her second release, Mercy.

The rising Welsh star entered the chart at No.1 on download sales alone to confirm her status as one of the most promising new acts in England. Mercy is Duffy’s second single – the first being the excellent Rockferry, which is the title track of her debut album.

Duffy’s success came at the expense of US rockers Nickelback, who stayed at No.2 with Rockstar.

Her album is released in stores on March 3 – one week after the physical release of Mercy in record shops.

Hawaiian singer Jack Johnson held onto the top spot in the UK’s album chart, however, with his latest LP Sleep Through The Static. It meant that Nickelback once again had to settle for second spot with their LP, All The Right Reasons.

Another significant album release was the 25th anniversary edition of Michael Jackson’s iconic album Thriller, which entered the chart at number three.

The anniversary special comes complete with new tracks featuring hip-hop stars Kanye West and Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas.

Morrissey’s Greatest Hits LP hit the chart at number five, while North Yorkshire guitar group One Night Only debuted at 10 with Started A Fire.
