Elbow, Seldom Seen Kid

Story by Jack Foley

THE Seldom Seen Kid, the Mercury Music Prize winning album from Elbow, has been named the album of the year by UK music critics, according to a survey from HMV.

The “poll of polls” included votes from media critics as well as staff from the record retailer, and online customers, which saw The Seldom Seen Kid nominated by 18 out of the 35 outlets polled.

Portishead’s Third came second, while Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ Dig, Lazarus, Dig came third.

The top five was rounded out by albums from Fleet Foxes and Vampire Weekend.

Ironically, the year’s biggest-selling album, Duffy’s Rockferry, only came 28th in the list.

1) The Seldom Seen Kid – Elbow
2) Third – Portishead
3) Dig, Lazarus, Dig – Nick Cave
4) Fleet Foxes – Fleet Foxes
