Glastonbury 2008: Jay-Z confirmed

Jay-Z

Story by Jack Foley

US RAPPER Jay-Z has been confirmed as a headline act at this summer’s Glastonbury Festival.

Organiser Michael Eavis told the BBC that the hip hop luminary was on the bill for the event in June in a bid to appeal to younger concert-goers.

The announcement comes in the same week that Neil Diamond was also confirmed for the Sunday line-up and when ticket registration opened.

Eavis has long maintained that he wants to “break with tradition” this year and “put on something totally different”. And he views the addition of a hip hop star like Jay-Z as a step towards that.

“He will appeal to the young people and under-25s for sure, so that’s a big pull for them,” he told BBC Somerset. “It’s not like the traditional one we do, like Radiohead, Coldplay and Muse and Oasis.”

Registration for the three-day festival – which takes place from June 27-29, is now open and anyone wanting to attend must submit their details and a photo by March 15.

It is important to note that registration does not guarantee you a ticket but everyone who wants to buy a ticket when they go on sale on April 6 must be registered first.

An estimated 175,000 people are expected to attend this year’s event.
