Glee: The Music - Season 2, Volume 4

THE cast of Glee continue to impress with this latest addition to the ever-expanding soundtrack catalogue.

Just weeks after the release of The Rocky Horror Glee Show EP comes the first compilation of Season 2, which includes several songs taken from the Britney Spears tribute episode as well as the usual blend of contemporary hits and big show tunes.

As ever, every cast member shines, although the mix is spread more evenly between regulars like Lea Michele, Chris Colfer, Cory Monteith and Amber Riley and newcomers like Chord Overstreet or ‘supporting’ regulars such as Heather Morris. But no matter what song they tackle, the ensemble singers always bring their own sense of style and emotion to what ensues.

Highlights therefore fly thick and fast, whether it’s the ensemble version of Jay-Z’s Empire State of Mind or Colfer’s melancholy, heartbreaking version of The Beatles’ I Wanna Hold Your Hand, which transforms the song as only Glee knows how.

Heather Morris and Santana Lopez purr seductively over a hip cover of Britney Spears’ Me Against The Music (sadly Morris’ take on Slave 4 U is absent!), while Joan Osborne’s One Of Us is another moment to savour, and delivered in ensemble fashion (to round off the religion episode).

Gwyneth Paltrow, meanwhile, rocks her cover of Cee Lo Green’s Forget You to go some way towards her image make-over of late (the gal can sing).
And Amber Riley and Santana Lopez own their take on Ike & Tina Turner’s River Deep/Mountain High.

There’s fun to be had, too, in the Glee’d up version of Dirty Dancing classic, I’ve Had The Time of My Life, featuring Dianne Agron and Chord Overstreet, which comes complete with belated gospel backing, and an acoustic version of Lucky (again performed by Agron and Overstreet).

But then, in truth, this show is so good at whatever it sets its mind to that almost every covered song is worth listening to. It’s part of what makes Glee so cool and so capable of such widespread appeal. And you really can’t begrudge them their success.
