Greg Weeks, The Hive

GREG Weeks, of Espers, describes his new solo album The Hive as “primarily a response to the atmosphere of apocalypse that permeates the lives of those who are open and receptive to their environment”.

Hmmm. He also stresses that it’s not “entirely about misery and despair”, citing his cover version of Madonna’s Borderline as an example.

But listening to The Hive more than a couple of times is likely to leave you feeling as gloomy – if not downright depressed – as the apocalyptic feelings that apparently inspired it.

Songs have a habit of going nowhere very slowly and while Weeks may claim they have a lot to say, you might not feel inclined to listen (particularly given the sentiment behind them).

His cover of Borderline is worth catching – slow and completely re-imagined so as to make you think twice that you are, in fact, listening to a cover version.

While the album rallies briefly during songs such as Funhouse and Not Meant For Light, which emerge as halfway decent psych folk tracks. But, alas, it’s not enough to save it from obscurity.

Weeks adds: “Key to the album’s sound was the acquisition of a vintage Mellotron keyboard. The Mellotron is doubtless my spirit animal in instrument form and is certainly one of the main inspirations behind The Hive.”

Well, while it helps to augment the instrumental work with a somewhat more refreshing sound, again it’s still not enough to keep you interested.
