Story by Jack Foley

THE Clapham Grand is to play host to a special concert in aid of The Institute of Cancer Research on Friday, May 2, 2008, featuring five emerging bands.

aZaidou, Lahayna, Services Rendered Club, Rokioski and Greg Holden will all take to the stage, while the organisers are also holding an auction and raffle with prizes such as a signed Liverpool FC shirt and ball, a day out for the driving enthusiast, signed CDs from some of the best bands around and a night in The Marriott Hotel.

The night is the brainchild of Tim Chapman, who is committed to raising as much money as possible for the Institute.

He told IndieLondon: “The Institute is the leading and most successful research unit of cancer causes and drugs (outside of the U.S.) but is still under funded.

“One third of us in the western world will be touched by cancer in our lifetime. Every hour in the UK, a man dies of prostate cancer (3 – 4 men every hour are diagnosed with PC) and every week in the UK, doctors have to tell 8 – 9 parents that their child has leukaemia.

“In terms of overall success rates, the Institute is ranked at number 4 in the world (the top 3 are in the States) and 20% of all the cancer drug treatments used worldwide have emanated from the I.C.R.

“Having met some of the scientists, clinicians, their fund raising team and Professor Peter Rigby, the Chief Executive and Prof Colin Cooper, Head of Male Cancer Research, I’m convinced that we really can help to make a significant contribution to their excellent work and help to speed up the drive to vanquish cancer.”
