Jason Mraz's Beautiful Mess - Live on Earth

Review by Jack Foley

IndieLondon Rating: 3 out of 5

JASON Mraz looks to round off a memorable year with the release of Beautiful Mess – Live on Earth, a live CD/DVD that seeks to celebrate what a remarkable 12 months he’s had.

Recorded and shot live from Jason’s Gratitude Cafe Tour at Charter One Pavilion in Chicago on August 13, 2009, the 16-track set list features key moments from Mraz’s smash hit album We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things, as well as crowd favourites from his earlier work (including The Remedy).

As with most live releases, it plays better to the fans than any newcomers curious to see what the fuss is all about. But it does underline what a good performer Mraz is – a charismatic frontman, a strong songwriter and someone with a strong arsenal of sing-along hits to his name.

The highlights come courtesy of the biggest hits, with I’m Yours the pick of the set list – an ode to love that celebrates happiness. It’s difficult not to get caught up in its positivity.

But there’s a nice duet with Colbie Caillat on Lucky to savour, while moments such as Sunshine Song and Traveler/Make It Mine are among the favourites.

Curiously, the live version of The Remedy is more laidback than the single version and more in keeping with the chilled out vibe of Mraz’s most recent material. I would have liked to see/hear a more faithful rendition.

His mix of jazz/pop is also a little too samey in places as well… making this even more of a fan favourite only. You really have to dig the Jason Mraz thing to get the fullest appreciation for it!

But there’s a typically chilled cover version of Lionel Ritchie’s All Night Long to enjoy before the encore moments for Butterfly and The Boy’s Gone round things off in fine Mraz style.

To recap on Mraz’s excellent year, however… the artist has sold well over three million copies of We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things, earned three Grammy nominations and been honoured by the Environmental Media Association for his leadership in implementing eco-friendly initiatives in touring and recording.

Say what you will, the man has talent.
