Jennifer's Body OST - Review
Review by Jack Foley
AS you might have been able to anticipate, the soundtrack to Jennifer’s Body, the hip new horror from the writer of Juno, boasts an equally hip line-up of American frat-rock favourites.
We’re talking about some of the mainstays of US popular alt-rock, such as Panic At The Disco, Cobra Starship and Cute Is What We Aim For, as well as global sensations such as Florence & The Machine and Little Boots.
The result, while certainly in keeping with the type of music you’d associate with an American college/high school-based movie, is actually pretty decent… and one that stands up to a good playlist in its own right.
As with any soundtrack, there are duds. Screeching Weasel’s suitably screeching, full speed ahead cover version of the reggae classic I Can See Clearly Now is a real horror, while the likes of White Lies’ Death and Celestial Crown’s The Sword are either merely ordinary or obligatorily loud.
But there are plenty of good songs that work well together. Bands such as Silversun Pickups lay down more evidence of why they’re a great band in waiting with the fuzzy rock of Little Lover’s So Polite, Lissy Trullie delivers an indie-pop shimmering mini-classic with the hopelessly catchy Ready For The Floor, and Dashboard Confessional come over all mean, moody and Pixies with Finishing School.
Of the heavy-hitters, Florence & The Machine display plenty of spunky attitude – in keeping with the tone of the movie – on Kiss With A Fist and kick things off in suitably rollicking fashion, while Panic At The Disco rock out in a Weezer kind of way with the “woo hoo” laden New Perspective.
Better still is the warped disco-charge of Little Boots’ New In Town, which lays down a funky strut, the mellow alt rock of Low Shoulder’s Through The Trees (which juggles piano and guitars in engaging fashion) and Cute Is What We Aim For’s melody-strewn slow-burner Time, which oozes romanticism with a punky, Green Day edge.
All in all, Jennifer’s Body makes for a pretty good listen, no matter what you end up thinking of the movie.
