Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z to play first Wireless Olympic Park gigs (2013)
Story by Jack Foley
JUSTIN Timberlake and Jay-Z have been confirmed as the first headline acts for this year’s Wireless festival at the new venue of London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
The stars will top the bill on separate nights on July 12 and 13 respectively. The gigs are organised by Live Nation and mark the first shows announced by the company since they quit Hyde Park last year.
Organisers said Jay-Z’s appearance would be his only European date in 2013, while Timberlake’s marks his only UK festival performance of 2013.
Timberlake will be joined on July 12 by Snoop Dogg, Trey Songz, John Legend and special guest, Frank Ocean.
While Jay-Z will topline a day that also includes sets from Emeli Sande, Rita Ora, Kendrick Lamar, DJ Fresh and Calvin Harris.
Steve Homer from Live Nation said: “Wireless Festival has gone from strength to strength since its inception in 2005. We’re incredibly excited to take it to its new home, London’s iconic Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.”
Tickets go on general sale on Friday, February 22, priced at £57.50 per day.
Dennis Hone, Chief Executive of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, said: “We are delighted to welcome world class artists like JAY Z and Justin Timberlake to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
“This summer we are hosting a summer series of events and concerts, including the fantastic Wireless Festival. We are on track to deliver a great summer, a top visitor destination and a great legacy for east London.”
And London Mayor Boris Johnson said: “This is a stellar line up of stars that is set to bring the house down this summer at Queen Elizabeth Park London. It proves that our fantastic Olympic park is now a destination of choice for world class musical events.”
