Kate Bush sets UK album record
Story by Jack Foley
KATE Bush has become the first woman to have eight albums in the charts at the same time.
Two of the singer’s albums – The Whole Story (number six) and Hounds of Love (no.9) – are in the top 10 of the new chart, while there are eight overall in the top 40.
50 Words For Snow sits at 20, with The Kick Inside – her debut album – at 24, The Sensual Word at 26, The Dreaming at 37, Never For Ever at 38 and Lionheart at 40.
The record comes at the end of the same week that Bush returned for her first live concerts for 35 years in London.
The only artists ahead of Bush are Elvis Presley, who had 12 entries in the top 40 after his death in 1977, and The Beatles who had 11 in 2009. However, it places her ahead of Madonna.
Martin Talbot, Official Charts Company chief executive, commented: “Her new live shows have created a huge stir, but for them to help push her catalogue to make such a significant sales impact is further evidence of the love that the British public have for her music, from generation to generation.”
This week’s new album chart is topped by Brighton rock duo Royal Blood with their self-titled album, which is the UK’s fastest-selling British rock debut release in three years.
