Katie Melua is top-selling female artist in UK (2005)

Katie Melua

Story by Jack Foley

KATIE Melua was the biggest selling female artist in the UK for the second year running in 2005.

Figures released by The Official UK Charts Company (OCC) reveal that despite her latest album only having been out for 13 weeks, the Georgian-born UK citizen remains the biggest selling female artist in Britain for 2005, after having been the biggest selling female artist in 2004.

The achievement is made all the more remarkable given that of the top 200 albums last year, only 35 were by female artists or female groups.

Melua beat KT Tunstall whose album, Eye To The Telescope, was released early in 2005.

Using official OCC figures for ‘over the counter’ sales (rather than pre-orders and shipments) – the top five female artists of last year are:

1. Katie Melua (1,076,240 sales)
2. K.T. Tunstall (1,023,650 sales)
3. Mariah Carey (969,270 sales)
4. Kelly Clarkson (952,225 sales)
5. Madonna (833,214 sales)

Katie Melua’s sales include 195,879 sales of Call Off The Search and 880,361 of Piece By Piece, her latest release.

Mariah Carey’s sales include 526,965 sales of The Emancipation of Mimi and 442,305 sales of Greatest Hits, while Madonna’s sales are all from Confessions On A Dance Floor.

Katie starts a UK and European tour on January 20 this year.
