Katie Price and Peter Andre - A Whole New World

Katie Price and Peter Andre, A Whole New World

CELEBRITY has a lot to answer for. The mainstream seems to be dominated by people who put themselves in the right place at the right time, irrespective of talent.

Programmes like Big Brother and the whole reality TV thing have provided extended careers for people who really shouldn’t be adorning the cover of OK! magazine or Heat every other week.

The celebrity culture has helped to ensure that someone like Victoria Beckham can continue to remain in the spotlight and become perceived as a cultural icon for practically doing nothing other than pouting or wearing designer labels. Paris Hilton is another example of this desperate culture.

And so too now are the celebrity couple of Katie Price (ex-page 3 babe Jordan) and Peter Andre. Until a couple of years ago, Katie was a model best known for breast enhancements and high-profile spats with fellow glamour girl, Jodie Marsh. Andre, meanwhile, was a fading pop star.

A stint on Celebrity Love Island followed and suddenly they were being hailed as the new Posh and Becks – a hopelessly devoted couple who never passed an opportunity to parade their affection for each other on the cover of any magazine willing to devote column inches to them.

As their celebrity profile has grown, so too have their opportunities to expand into new areas. Katie is now designing underwear (for the larger breasted woman) and has launched a singing career with Peter Andre in tow.

The result is this wretched collection of classic ballads, entitled A Whole New World which is being released with the promise that proceeds from sales will be donated to the couple’s favourite charities, Vision and NSPCC.

The tracks are designed to reflect the couple’s undying affection for each other and include A Whole New World, from Aladdin, Endless Love, Tonight I Celebrate My Love For You, I’ve Had The Time Of My Life and Cherish.

The result leaves you with the same sort of feeling you might have after over-eating chocolate cake for hours on end (or anything sweet, for that matter) – utterly, utterly sick.

To be fair, Katie can carry a tune. She’s clearly been practising and Andre also knows how to deliver a pop tune, given that he has enjoyed a successful career as a solo artist. But the whole endeavour is so sickeningly optimistic and rose-tinted that you’ll be praying for it to end.

Given the volume of quality artists who struggle to get the recognition their original music deserves, this kind of thing really shouldn’t be encouraged. It feels desperate, sounds inspid and is really quite depressing.
