Kenwood Picnic Concerts 2008: Van Morrison and Diana Krall on bill

BRIAN Wilson, Rufus Wainwright and Van Morrison are among the performers appearing at the Kenwood Picnic Concerts this summer (2008).

Kenwood House and Estate was left to the nation by Edward Cecil Guinness, first Earl of Iveagh in 1927. Situated on the northern edge of Hampstead Heath, it has provided an idyllic retreat from inner city life for many generations of Londoners. The annual concerts have now become a feature of the summer season.

The line-up is as follows…

Saturday, June 28, 7:30pm – Brian Wilson
Choosing from his remarkable song catalogue, Brian and his formidable ten-piece band will perform a number of classic compositions as well as a collection of The Beach Boys’ greatest hits.

Saturday, July 5, 7:30pm – Rufus Wainwright
Referred to by Elton John as “the greatest songwriter on the planet” and by NME as “the only living song writing genius”, Rufus Wainwright has established himself as one of the great male vocalists and songwriters of his generation by carving out his own singular sound.

Saturday, July 12, 7:30pm – Kenwood Summer Prom
The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, conducted by Ben Pope, presents the Kenwood Summer Prom. The programme will include well-known overtures and symphonic pieces by Mozart, Rossini, Wagner and Elgar, as well as Gershwin’s dazzling Rhapsody in Blue, played by award-winning international pianist Viv McLean. The evening will culminate with the musical dramatics of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. With a picnic and friends it is a perfect summer evening at Kenwood.

Saturday, July 19, 7:30pm – Omara Portuondo, star of the legendary Buena Vista Social Club
Direct from Havana, Cuba, international star of the Buena Vista Social Club returns to Kenwood with a selection of brilliant Cuban musicians for an extraordinary and vibrant evening of the very best of traditional and contemporary Cuban music.

Saturday, August 2, 7:30pm – Michael Ball & Lesley Garrett
Join two of the Britain’s best-loved singers for this extraordinary double-bill.

Saturday, August 9, 7:30pm – Diana Krall
Canadian born singer/pianist Diana Krall mixes her cool and expressive vocals with sensitive, soulful piano, drawing on a deep well from America’s Jazz and Pop traditions.

Saturday, August 16, 7:30pm – Van Morrison
Grammy Award winning musician Van Morrison brings to Kenwood his distinctive mix of jazz and blues, together with the Celtic influences of his Northern Irish roots.

Saturday, August 23, 7:30pm – Last Night of the Kenwood Proms featuring Katherine Jenkins
The ultimate Last Night of the Proms concert, featuring operatic superstar Katherine Jenkins with special guests Blake.
