Layo & Bushwacka! - Feels Closer

Layo & Bushwacka, Feels Closer

Review by Jack Foley

IndieLondon Rating: 2 out of 5

THERE’S a moment towards the end of Layo & Bushwacka’s latest release, Feels Closer when the album comes alive.

Isn’t This A Lovely Day features a terrific beat, some nice slabs of mouth organ and the deliciously haunting vocals of Ella Fitzgerald (not to mention some more samples from Louis Armstrong).

It’s a dreamy, lush delight that sets impossibly high standards that the rest of the album ultimately cannot reach.

Sadly, the rest of Feels Closer is divided between bland, repetitive dance beats and so-so dance-floor pleasers. There’s nothing to match the ingenuity or quiet exilharation of Isn’t This A Lovely Day.

We’ve Been Here Before attempts to liven things up with some sharp stabs of jazzy trumpet, while Saudade tosses in some shimmering acoustic guitar riffs and a really mellow middle section featuring the vocals of Jessy Molnar – but the track could have used more of this style earlier on and feels like a missed opportunity.

The ambient K, featuring Alison Jiear, ends things on a nicely chilled out note without really going anywhere in particular, while there’s some more nicely chilled out jazz behind Me and You featuring Rogerio Flausino.

But elsewhere the album fills things out with bland dance beats that fail to generate the necessary buzz, from former single Life2Live to the hopelessly bland Ride The Train.

Of those, only Hang Tough really makes an impression that’s above average.

Were it not for the presence of Isn’t This A Lovely Day, Feels Closer would have ended up a colossal disappointment.

As things stand, it’s a curiosity piece that’s worth hearing if only to appreciate that one particular track.
