Legendary Shack Shackers - Agridustrial

Legendary Shack Shakers, Agridustrial

Review by Jack Foley

IndieLondon Rating: 4 out of 5

THE Legendary Shack Shakers confront an America that is in decay on their seventh full-length album, Agridustrial, a no holds barred collection of furious rock and bone-crunching folk.

Described as “the statement of an American band fighting back against a society gone mad with greed and the usurpation of basic human dignities”, complete with a steadfastly southern ethos, it contains songs that praise Jesus (Sin Eater) and southern-fried provocateurs (Dixie Iron Fist, as well as taking you on a historic journey.

Hoboes Are My Heroes is borne from singer J.D. Wilkes’ recent experience of riding the rails to meet the men that are living on the fringes of America, as well as to absorb the rustic rhythm of that life, while Night Ride recounts the history of Kentucky’s infamous vigilante farmer’s union, the Night Riders, who wreaked havoc on non-union tobacco farms in the early 1900’s.

All the while, guitars whip up into riff-laden frenzies, banjos run riot and harmonicas infuse several of the tracks to really round out the southern influence.

Sometimes this is a little too frenzied and riotous to be ultra enjoyable. But it does also give rise to some pretty darn kick-ass footstomping moments, as well as a nice line in songwriting humour.

God Fearing People is a thrilling blend of husky vocals and mouth organ that raises hell, Two Tickets To Hell is a banjo-laced rock-out that drops a menace-laden chorus, and Nightride is a good time classic that should set the country dancefloor alight.

We also liked the good time yodelling of Dump Road Yodel (the sound of the band kicking back and having some proper fun), the laidback Hoboes Are My Heroes and the brokedown piano anthem The Lost Cause.

Legendary Shack Shakers may not appeal in everything they do, yet somehow their new album comes highly recommended… particularly if you like your music deep-fried, southern coated and furiously delivered.
