ORGANISERS have confirmed that rock band Maximo Park will officially open this year’s Glastonbury Festival, which takes place from Wednesday, June 24 to Sunday, June 28, 2009.

The group, whose hits include Apply Some Pressure and Our Velocity, will play in the new William Green area of the site at 4pm on Thursday, June 25. And although only 1,500 festival goers will be able to see their performance live, it will be broadcast on big screens across the site.

The group will, however, play the Other Stage on Saturday night.

Speaking about their part in the festival, lead singer Paul Smith said: “Glastonbury’s still a festival that takes chances, as proven by Jay-Z’s triumphant appearance last year.

“So it’s an honour for us to be the first band on, in such intimate surroundings.

“It’s also an excuse to hang out and watch loads of brilliant music until we play the Other Stage on Saturday.”

And a Glastonbury spokesman said: “We are really excited about this extra special Maxïmo Park gig to kick off the festival.”

Blur, Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young will headline the event, with Lily Allen and Tony Christie also taking part.

Tickets are now sold out.
