SIR Paul McCartney is to receive an Ultimate Legend award at the MTV Europe Music Awards in his home city of Liverpool on Thursday (November 6, 2008).

The former Beatle is due to pick up the specially-created accolade at the ceremony – but is not expected to perform.

According to an MTV spokesman, the award has been created to honour “one of the most formative influences on the music scene on a global scale”.

Richard Godfrey, executive producer of the event, added that it was fitting that the 15th anniversary of the awards would see Sir Paul’s achievements being recognised in his home town.

In a further tribute, MTV Networks International chairman Bill Roedy described Sir Paul as “one of the true greats”, stating: “Not only has he has been one of the most formative influences on the music scene on a global scale, but he is one of the founding fathers that has earned Liverpool the recent accolade as most musical city in the UK.”

An estimated audience of 30 million people is expected to watch the awards ceremony, which takes place at Liverpool’s Echo Arena, and where artists including Take That, Beyonce, Pink, Duffy and The Killers will perform.

Coldplay and Duffy lead the nominations with three each going into the ceremony, which will be hosted by US singer Katy Perry.
