Meatloaf forced to cancel European tour (2007)

Story by Jack Foley

MEATLOAF has been forced to cancel his European tour after being diagnosed with a cyst on his vocal cords.

The 60-year-old rock veteran had been due to appear at London’s Wembley Arena tonight (November 6, 2007) but was heartbroken to have to concede defeat against his ongoing health issues.

The popular star had already scrapped two gigs last week on doctor’s orders – and has finally been forced to call a halt to the remaining tour schedule as illness has got the better of his good intentions.

In a statement, Meatloaf said: “It really breaks my heart not to be able to perform these shows – but I will be back.”

The statement will bring hope to the thousands of fans left disappointed by the news, especially since rumours of Meatloaf’s retirement from music have been fuelled by a comment he made following the Newcastle cancellation, when he referred to it as “the last show I may ever do in my life”.

He added: “I can no longer continue. I take my coat off and thank you for 30 years.”

But Meatloaf’s promoters immediately played down the remarks, insisting they were made as a result of “exhaustion and stress”.

His management later issued a statement saying he was suffering from laryngitis and had been ordered to rest by doctors.

But in light of the further cancellations it was announced on Tuesday (November 6) that Meatloaf had been diagnosed with an “inter-vocal cord cyst”.

While most cysts of this type require surgery, voice therapy is usually conducted first to determine if it is necessary and doctors will determine what further course of action may be required over the next four to six weeks.

Meatloaf’s statement continued: “I was really looking forward to capping off a great year and celebrating the start of the holidays with the fans. But I have to do what the doctors tell me so I can look forward to healing and coming back strong in 2008.”

The cancelled dates are (all November)...

8 – Nottingham
11 – Cardiff
13 – Horsens, Denmark

17 – Stockholm
20 – Rotterdam
22 – Belfast
