Melanie C - This Time

Melanie C, This Time

Review by Jack Foley

IndieLondon Rating: 2 out of 5

AS RUMOURS of a Spice Girls rumour continue to persist (Geri Halliwell has even reportedly approached Victoria Beckham with a view to doing something), Melanie C releases her fourth solo album in the form of This Time.

The result is a fairly pedestrian pop album that boasts several producers (Stephen Hague, Steve Mac, Guy Chambers and Richard Flack) as well as collaborations with Adam Argyle and Peter-John Vettese. But rather than delivering anything truly inspiring, it just kind of exists.

There’s no denying that Melanie C is probably the most vocally talented of the former girl group members but This Time is a little too ballad-heavy for my tastes.

Songs are packed with plenty of emotional lyrics and delivered in suitably passionate style – but you can pick out some of the influences and tick off when they’ve been done better. Immune, for instance, has a touch of the Goo Goo Dolls about it, while opening track Understand begins as though it’s about to drift into U2’s City of Shining Lights.

That track is actually one of the more lively on the album, but there isn’t really one song that forces you to sit up and take notice. The mind tends to drift too frequently.

What If I Stay contains a pleasant enough guitar melody but it’s let down by a weak chorus, while the piano laced Protected is another that promises more than it ultimately delivers. What’s more, it’s rife with sappy lyrics about angels crying.

If you had to pick out highlights, then Carolyna is a rockier offering where Melanie C’s vocals actually feel stretched and much more invigorating (the chorus is one of the more rousing), while her collaboration with Adam Argyle on Don’t Let Me Go features some nice guitar work to enliven the musical backdrop.

But even such moments struggle to escape the formulaic nature of the majority of proceedings, and which ultimately prevent the album from rising above the mundane.
