Metallica announce full UK tour (2009)

Story by Jack Foley

METALLICA are set to play a full tour of the UK for the first time since October 1996.

The band will play a total of seven dates, commencing in Nottingham in February 2009 and including two nights at London’s O2 Arena.

In addition to the O2 date at the beginning of March, they will now play a second show on Saturday, March 28, 2009.

All the dates will be performed in the round with general admission tickets situated on the floor, with reserved seating off the floor. Tickets go on sale at 9am on Friday, October 24, 2008, with support on all dates coming from Machine Head and The Sword.

The band recently released the 12th album in their 27-year career which marked their unprecedented reign as THE greatest hard rock band in history.

Death Magnetic hit the No. 1 slot in 32 countries and it also stormed to the top of the UK charts where it remained for two weeks, making it their third UK No.1 album.

Death Magnetic has held onto pole position in the European charts for FIVE weeks now, and not even the release of a new Oasis album could shake it!

On their last visit to the UK in September this year, Metallica played an intimate show in front of 300 competition winners at the BBC Radio Theatre, which was later transmitted on Radio 1 in a five hour Metallica-fest.

The band played a fans-only show at the 02 Arena, with the £5 per head ticket money going to UK charity Youth Music and also made a rare TV appearance on Later with Jools Holland.

Commenting on the new dates, the band said: “We can’t wait to visit the UK again, so strap in, hang on, and get ready for the nuttiness to begin.”

The UK tour dates are (all 2009):

25 – Nottingham Trent FM Arena
26 – Manchester Evening News Arena
28 – Sheffield Arena

2 – The O2 Arena
3 – Newcastle Metro Radio Arena
