Milos Karadaglic – Latino (Review)

Milos, Latino

Review by Jack Foley

IndieLondon Rating: 4 out of 5

HAVING wowed fans with his debut album Guitar a year ago, Milos Karadaglic returns with a sophomore session dedicated to the guitar music of the Latin world. And it’s an often beautifully composed listen.

Representing the core classical guitar repertoire are solo pieces by Villa-Lobos and Ponce that share a link in the towering figure of Andrés Segovia, for whom both men composed key works.

As Miloš points out: “Villa-Lobos is an essential figure in the development of our instrument. In collaboration with Segovia he created works which really challenged the humble nature of the guitar – its technical and musical possibilities, its palette of colour and sheer power.”

Miloš makes a telling analogy: “Segovia is to guitarists what Callas is for singers. He created a new sound world, and helped the guitar to win new admirers and earn respect as a solo instrument equal to any other on the international concert platform.”

The ensuing album is perhaps more subtle than you may have been expecting with only occasional flashes of the fiery Latin passion. But it’s almost always compelling as a listen.

His rendition of Piazzolla’s Libertango is a wonderful waltz between classical strings and his own guitar that screams cinematic values, while there’s a wonderful sense of romance underpinning the playful guitar licks that accompany Morel’s Danza Brasilera.

The Tango is thrillingly delivered on both Tango En Skai (from Dyens) and in more recognisable fashion on Gardel’s Por Una Cabeza, which again features a playful marriage of strings and guitar.

Elsewhere, there’s slow-building beauty on tracks like Un Dia de Noviembre and Farres’ Quizas, Quizas Quizas and some brisk strumming on the joyful Batucada.

While there’s a keen sense of cinematic romanticism on the stark, poignant Oblivion.

Throughout, however, Milos always does something with his guitar to mesmerise, capturing both the classical and the Latino in exemplary fashion. He looks set to have another massive hit on his hands.
