MTV Europe Music Awards 2006 - Gnarls Barkley & Justin Timberlake win

Justin Timberlake

Story by Jack Foley

JUSTIN Timberlake and Gnarls Barkley were the biggest winners at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2006, after collecting two prizes.

But the ceremony will be remembered for an outburtst from another hip-hop artist, Kanye West, who stormed the stage to protest after missing out on a second award for Best Video.

West had previously been named the best hip hop act, to which he gushed: “This is amazing for me to be recognised this far away from America.”

But his delight turned to rage when he lost the best video award to Justice Vs Simian for We Are Your Friends and he returned to the stage to say: “Best video should have been mine. I should have won.”

In what proved to be a star-studded bash, Justin Timberlake – who also hosted the event – was named best male and best pop act. He joked that he only won because he agreed to present the 13th annual event in Copenhagen.

Gnarls Barkley, meanwhile, won awards for best new act and best song, for Crazy.

Pre-awards favourites, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, who went into the ceremoy with four nominations, took home just one prize – best album award for Stadium Arcadium.

Depeche Mode were named best group, fellow Britons Muse were crowned best alternative act, and The Kooks were named best UK and Ireland.

The Killers, meanwhile, won the award for best rock act and were among the artists who performed to an estimated 10,000 people in the Danish capital’s main square, where the temperature was just above freezing.

Other prizes went to Christina Aguilera, who was named best female artist, and Rihanna, who won best R&B artist.

Madonna, Shakira and Nelly Furtado had all been nominated in three categories but won no awards.
