MTV Europe Music Awards 2007: Muse and Lavigne win

Story by Jack Foley

ROCK band Muse and pop star Avril Lavigne took home two awards each at the 2007 MTV Europe Music Awards in Germany.

Muse were named best UK and Ireland act and best headline act, while Lavigne was named best solo artists and took most addictive track for her song, Girlfriend.

Amy Winehouse, who performed her hit song Back To Black at the Munich ceremony, was also presented with the Artist Choice gong – an accolade chosen by fellow musicians.

R&B star Rihanna took the ultimate urban act, having spent weeks at No.1 all over Europe earlier this year with her hit Umbrella.

And Linkin Park won the prize for best band of 2007, with German rockers, Tokio Hotel, generating a big cheer from their home fans after scooping the prize for best international act.

Another rock band, 30 Seconds To Mars, featuring actor Jared Leto as lead singer, took home the rock out gong, while French duo Justice won the video star award for their track D.A.N.C.E.

Incredibly, Justin Timberlake, who won two awards last year and who led the field with four nominations this year, failed to pick up any prizes whatsoever.

However, Lavigne was delighted with her wins and upon accepting the best solo artist said: “I’m so happy to be able to stand up here tonight and accept this award. It’s an honour to have you guys all the way in Europe listening to my music. It’s crazy.”

The glittering event took place on Thursday, November 1, 2007, and was hosted by controversial rapper Snoop Dogg. It also featured live performances from Mika, Avril Lavigne, My Chemical Romance and the Foo Fighters.
