MTV Europe Music Awards 2008: Britney Spears scoops two awards

Britney Spears

Story by Jack Foley

BRITNEY Spears won two of the top prizes at the MTV Europe Music Awards (2008) – but pre-ceremony favourites Duffy and Coldplay both departed empty-handed.

Pop singer Spears was crowned act of 2008 and best album at the ceremony, which took place in Liverpool on Thursday, November 6 (2008).

Another act to receive two awards were Jared Leto’s band, 30 Seconds To Mars, who scooped the Rock Out prize and Best Video Star.

Leto’s acceptance speech was one of several to pay tribute to newly elected US President Barack Obama, when he asked the crowd to stand in honour of the President-elect.

Amid rapturous cheers, he added: “Liverpool, lets hear it for Barack Obama.”

Another mention of Obama’s success came from Kanye West and Estelle, who performed their hit American Boy with the US President-elect’s face projected onto a giant screen behind them.

And ceremony host Host Katy Perry observed: “Maybe Europe will love us again now.”

In other awards, Pink won the prize for most addictive track (or best single of the year) and Rick Astley was named MTV viewers’ Best Act Ever after an online campaign to orchestrate votes for the 80s star.

Kanye West was named Ultimate Urban act and evening hostess Perry – who made 12 costumes changes during the show – was named best new act.

Former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney was greeted by rapturous applause as he was named Ultimate Legend.

The legend thanked his family and former bandmates in a short speech after being presented with the one-off prize by U2 singer Bono.

He commented: “Many years ago, four little boys were born here in Liverpool and we went on to do quite well. So thanks, as I say, to all my family, to all of you for coming along, everyone in Liverpool, everyone in Britain, everyone in America – for voting in Mr Obama. I love you!”
