MTV Europe Music Awards: Eminem, Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry among winners
Story by Jack Foley
MILEY Cyrus, Eminem and Katy Perry were among the winners at the 20th MTV Europe Music Awards.
Cyrus won her first EMA in the best video category for Wrecking Ball, while Eminem won the award for best hip hop artist. His accolade came in addition to being recognised as this year’s global icon, an award that last year had gone to the late Whitney Houston.
Thanking his fans, label bosses and colleagues as well as all “European ladies”, his award was greeted by a deafening reception that was later matched following his performance of Berzerk and Rap God.
Three-time winner Perry picked up her first best female performer award and told the crowd: “I love what I do. I hope you can tell.”
Other prizes on the night (Sunday, November 10, 2013) went to Bruno Mars, who was honoured in the best song category for Locked Out Of Heaven, and to Justin Bieber, who kept his best male win streak going for a fourth straight year.
Chris Lee, of China, sprung one of the night’s surprises by being crowned best worldwide act, beating out competition from both One Direction and Bieber, while Macklemore & Ryan Lewis took the best new act.
One Direction didn’t depart empty-handed, however, picking up the award for best pop. But pre-awards favourite Justin Timberlake did, failing to convert any of his five nominations into trophies.
There were also awards for Green Day (best rock), Thirty Seconds To Mars (best alternative), Beyonce (best live) and Avicii (best electronic).
This year’s awards ceremony was held in Amsterdam and featured performances from the likes of Miley Cyrus, Eminem and The Killers.
Award presenters included singer/songwriter Ellie Goulding, singer/actress Carice van Houten (Game of Thrones), Rita Ora and Colton Haynes (Arrow, Teen Wolf).
