MTV Video Awards 2006: Panic! At The Disco triumph

Panic! At The Disco

Story by Jack Foley

PANIC! at the Disco have won video of the year at the MTV Video Awards, beating both Madonna and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

The Las Vegas based quartet won the top honour for their single I Write Sins Not Tragedies, edging out Madonna’s Hung Up and the Chili Peppers’ Dani California.

In what proved to be a disappointing ceremony for the queen of pop, Madonna was forced to leave empty-handed despite being nominated in five categories.

The best pop video award went to Pink for Stupid Girls – a song that also beat Madonna’s Hung Up and Nelly Furtado’s Promiscuous.

British singer James Blunt won the best male video for You’re Beautiful and best cinematography, while Kelly Clarkson won the best female award for Because of You.

The best group video award went to All-American Rejects for Move Along and Beyonce won best R’n’B video for Check On It.

Latin pop singer Shakira, who went into the evening with a total of seven nominations, received only one – for best choreography for Hips Don’t Lie.

The awards were hosted by School of Rock actor Jack Black at New York’s Radio City Music Hall.

It was the first time the awards had returned to New York after spending two years in Miami.
