MTV Video Music Awards 2010: Lady Gaga romps to victory

A publicity shot from the inimitable Lady Gaga.

Story by Jack Foley

HAVING entered the ceremony with a record 13 nominations, Lady Gaga stole the night with eight trophies at the MTV Music Video Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night (September 12, 2010).

Winning every performance category in which she was nominated, the pop queen took home trophies for video of the year, best female video, best dance video and best pop video (all for Bad Romance) and best collaboration (Telephone) with Beyonce. She also picked up trophies for best direction and best editing.

In typically flamboyant style, Lady Gaga wore a different Alexander McQueen created outfit to the stage for each acceptance speech – and thanked the fans who have helped turn her into such a music phenomenon.

“Tonight, little monsters, we’re the cool kids at the party,” she said.

In other awards, best male video and best hip-hop video honors went to comeback rapper Eminem, who also opened the show with a live performance of the winning track Not Afraid and his duet with Rihanna, Love the Way You Lie.

Justin Bieber was crowned best new artist (as voted for by fans) for Baby, his collaboration with Ludacris, while actor-musician Jared Leto’s rock band 30 Seconds to Mars took the best rock video for Kings and Queens.

Of the UK acts nominated, Muse won best special effects for Uprising and Florence and the Machine won best art direction for Dog Days Over, which she also performed at the awards.
