ARCTIC Monkeys have won five NME awards, including best British band and album.

The Sheffield-based indie four-piece also won the live band prize, while lead singer Alex Turner was named hero of the year. The awards follow their double triumph at the Brits.

Other big winners on the night includded Lily Allen, who was named best solo artist, and Haim, who beat Daft Punk to the best international band trophy.

The band’s guitarist and singer Alana Haim also picked up a prize in her own right for having the best Twitter feed.

The NME honours are voted for by music fans and have a number of varied categories aside from the big main prizes.

Hence, Breaking Bad was named best TV show, Morrissey’s memoir was recognised with best music autobiography and One Direction star Harry Styles was named villain of the year for a second year running.

The 1975 were given the worst band prize ahead of One Direction and The Wanted.

A one-off prize went to former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney in recognition of his songwriting and the veteran icon was there to collect the award in person, saying: “The great thing about songwriting is that you don’t know how you do it.”

Damon Albarn collected two prizes: one award for innovation for the continual reinvention of his career and another for his performance with ex-Oasis star Noel Gallagher last March at a concert in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust. It was deemed the Music Moment of 2013.

Blondie took this year’s Godlike Genius prize and the Teenage Cancer Trust Outstanding Contribution to Music Award went to Belle & Sebastian.
