Nouvelle Vague presents New Wave

Review by Jack Foley

IndieLondon Rating: 2.5 out of 5

ACCORDING to one set of statistics, 74% of listeners are more likely to have heard a cover version of a new wave artist than the original themselves.

It’s not that surprising given the pop culture trend for covering everything that moves – sometimes well, sometimes shamefully.

French trio Nouvelle Vague try to do something different by using new wave artists to cover classic hits. The result is this 24-song, 2CD collection that takes on everything from The Rolling Stones to The Velvet Underground in leftfield, kitsch fashion.

Sadly, it’s more of a curiosity piece than a worthwhile collection that contains more misses than hits.

Devo and Polyphonic Size’s covers of Satisfaction and Mother’s Little Helper (both done much better by Mick Jagger and co) are quite perplexing in the way in which they ruthlessly squander any of their potential.

While Elton Montello’s take on Jet Boy Jet Girl is just plain forgettable.

Typically, it’s the artists you already know who provide the better moments. Duran Duran provide an interesting take on Fame, Joy Division deliver a suitably satisfying live version of The Velvet Underground’s Sister Ray and Gary Numan works wonders with On Broadway.

A couple of other highlights come courtesy of Orchestral Manouevres In The Dark’s Waiting For The Man and The Stranglers’ epic Walk On By.

But on an album of 24 songs, you can pretty much count the hits on the fingers on one hand – and that’s not a good thing!

  1. love the comp! “done much better by Mick Jagger …...”, that is not the point; they are not covers, just re-interpretations!!! that is what make them interesting. it’s a 1980 synth take on these classics. pierre, france
