ONE Direction’s Midnight Memories was the UK’s biggest selling album of 2013.

The LP beat Emile Sandé’s Our Version of Events by selling 685,000 copies since its release in November compared to Sandé’s 683,000 sales in 2013.

Commenting on the achievement, One Direction’s Liam Payne said: “This tops an amazing year for us. We’re so excited to have the biggest selling album in the UK this year, especially with a record we are all so proud of. We’d like to thank everyone who has bought the album, it really means a lot to us.”

Midnight Memories also sold over 237,000 copies during its first week on sale, making it the fastest-selling UK album of 2013 as well as of One Direction’s career so far.

The figures were compiled by The Official Charts Company. But they also reveal no album by a single artist has reached a million sales in 2013 – the first time that has happened in more than 20 years.

A full list of the year’s top selling singles and albums is due in the new year.
