Paramore - The Final Riot!

Paramore, The Final Riot!

Review by Jack Foley

IndieLondon Rating: 4 out of 5

HAVING toured nearly non-stop since the release of last year’s US platinum-certified and UK Gold certified second album Riot!, Paramore look to cap an extraordinary year with the release of The Final Riot!, a live CD and DVD that really is a must-have for any fan of the band.

The CD, which was recorded on the final night of the Final Riot tour in Chicago, showcases just what a great live band Paramore are… with live renditions of hits such as Misery Business and That’s What You Get sure to have every fan singing along, or playing some air guitar.

The DVD, meanwhile, is called 40 Days of RIOT!, and takes the form of an exclusive documentary feature from director Brandon Chesbro, which documents the band in their most intimate moments on tour, with exclusive interviews, full access behind-the-scenes and on the bus, at sound check, at rehearsals, and more.

On top of all the access documentary footage, an entire 15 song live set was filmed at the Chicago show during the Final Riot! Tour, for what the band has called “their best show ever”.

The most striking thing about the live set, however, is just how good the guitar work is – combining some crunching power riffs with some genuinely thrilling (and melodic) solos that clearly lift the crowd.

Frontwoman Hayley Williams also maintains an endearing presence, interacting with the crowd at every opportunity and really putting forward a brilliant showcase of her powerhouse punk-pop vocals.

Highlights include the obvious hits such as That’s What You Get, as well as Pressure, the more intimate My Heart (a late set inclusion, according to Williams) and When It Rains, which finds them at their most commercial and universally appealing.

The piano opening of Emergency gives rise to another late set highlight, while the rousing cover version of Hallelujah and fan favourite Misery Business bring the show to a thrilling close – whether you’re diehard Paramore fans or not (which really is saying something).

Paramore closed out 2008 by featuring prominently on the soundtrack to vampire movie smash Twilight… so expect 2009 to be even bigger for them given the newfound exposure that will certainly bring them.
