Placido Domingo and Angela Gheorghiu announce O2 London date

Placido Domingo

Story by Jack Foley

PLACIDO Domingo and Angela Gheorghiu are to play a special live concert at London’s O2 Arena on Friday, July 29, 2011.

The concert will mark Domingo’s first solo UK concert appearance since he underwent surgery to remove a ‘malignant localised polyp’ from his colon earlier this year.

The 69-year-old Spanish tenor was due to have played Bajazet in Handel’s Tamerlano at Covent Garden in March but pulled out at at short notice when he felt abdominal pains while singing in Tokyo.

He will be joined for this very special performance by Angela Gheorghiu, the Romanian soprano opera singer, who has sung as soprano in leading roles at New York’s Metropolitan Opera, Covent Garden’s Royal Opera House, the Vienna State Opera, Milan’s La Scala, and many other opera houses in Europe and the United States since making her professional debut in 1990.

She has recorded many recital albums and complete opera recordings and often appears on television and in concerts.

The EMI recording of Massenet’s Manon with Angela Georghiu in the title role won the 2001 Gramophone Award for Best Opera Recording, and was nominated for Best Opera Recording at the 2002 Grammy Awards

Tickets go on sale on Friday, November 19 at 9am.
