Q Awards 2007: Arctic Monkeys names best act in the world

Arctic Monkeys

Story by Jack Foley

THE ARCTIC Monkeys were named the best act in the world at the 2007 Q Awards in London on Monday, October 8, in an awards ceremony that largely reflected current trends.

Amy Winehouse took best album for Back To Black and Muse won best live act, while Kate Nash was named best breakthrough artist.

Manic Street Preachers took the prize for the year’s best track (for Your Love Alone Is Not Enough) and Kaiser Chiefs won best video (for Ruby).

Classic awards were presented to Stereophonics for their single Local Boy In The Photograph and The Verve for their album Urban Hymns.

The awards were presented at a lunchtime ceremony at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel, when a number of musicians also received prizes in recognition of their influential careers.

Sir Paul McCartney was named icon of the year, Kylie Minogue was named idol of 2007 and Blur and Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn was awarded for inspiration.

Minogue, 39, received a standing ovation from her peers in what was her first appearance at an awards ceremony since returning to the limelight following her treatment for breast cancer.

And Sir Paul also received a cheer from the audience as he paid tribute to late wife Linda, who died in 1998.

A further songwriting award was presented to Billy Bragg, while Sigur Ros were honoured for their innovation in sound.

Ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, now working with Modest Mouse, received a lifetime achievement prize award and Ian Brown was presented with the Q legend prize.

Q magazine is celebrating its 21st birthday this year. The award winners in full were…
