Record Store Day 2011: What to expect and listen out for...

The View

Story by Jack Foley

SATURDAY, April 16, 2011, is Record Store Day 2011 – the annual celebration of independent record shops around the country.

This year, organisers have selected The View (pictured) to create an official anthem for the event, which they have done in the form of a cover of ’80s power-pop anthem I Need That Record by The Tweeds.

The track will be available on Saturday, April 16 exclusively (and reviewed as part of our singles round-up on Sunday/Monday)!

About record store day: Record Store Day 2011 will see more than 150 independent record stores participate and sell around 100 exclusive and collectible items that are only available on the day.

The day came into being in 2007 when over 700 independent stores in the USA came together to celebrate their unique culture.

The UK followed suit and 2011 will see the third celebration of the UK’s unique independent sector.

Festivities include performances, meet & greets with artists, DJ’s, in store quizzes and many other events.

Here’s a selection of what’s on offer…

1) 6Music has pressed up an exclusive 12” single featuring the soundtracks to their latest TV trailers curated by presenters including Jarvis Cocker, Cerys Matthews and Steve Lamacq to be given away in RSD stores.

2) The View’s I Need That Record will be released as a limited edition one-sided 7” single (available only from participating indie record shops).

The band will also be playing an instore at Rock-a-Boom in Leicester (4 Silver Walk, Leicester, LE1 5EW) on Record Store Day.

3) Following on from the digital release of the Marriage remix EP in late February, Gold Panda is issuing the stunning results as a 12” vinyl especially for this year’s Record Store Day. The 12” is a limited run of 600 and is sure to be highly sought after.

4) Emerging London 3-piece Cymbals will release a select run of their debut album Unlearn on 12” vinyl for Record Store Day 2011.

They will also play a free show at The Victory in Dalston, London in the evening to celebrate. The record comes in an individually hand screen-printed sleeve by artist Sinead Evans limited to a pressing of 300.

5) Miles Kane is to release a cover of the classic Edwyn Collins track A Girl Like You on limited 7” vinyl. The B-side is a cover of Jerry Goldsmith’s legendary soundtrack piece Our Man Flint.

6) Poly Styrene – the unforgettable frontwoman and iconic face of the seminal band X-ray Spex – has announced she will be releasing a limited edition coloured vinyl. The single, Virtual Boyfriend, will be released as an individually numbered red 10” vinyl, limited to 300 copies.

7) Texan psych rockers The Black Angels release a limited edition 10” vinyl B-Sides collection titled Phosgene Nightmare on Blue Horizon Records.
