Record Store Day 2013: Willy Mason and Brendon Benson join forces
Story by Jack Foley
TO mark this year’s Record Store Day on April 20, 2013, Willy Mason and Brendan Benson have joined forces and put to tape Upstairs at United vol. 7.
Brendan Benson expertly produced, assembled and conducted an arsenal of stellar musicians who graced the sacred space upstairs at United Record Pressing in Nashville. The concept, conjured up by Mason and Benson was to record seven songs all written by Willy’s folk artist parents Jemima James and Michael Mason.
Upstairs At United Vol. 7. recorded exclusively for Record Store Day, is a brilliantly unique recording featuring everything from upright bass, mandolin, pump organ, viola, fiddle, cocktail table percussion, and more.
Upstairs At United is a series of all analog, direct to tape, live studio recordings, taped above the pressing plant in tribute to the rich historical significance of that space.
One of four videos filmed during the unique recording process, Waiter at the Station, penned by Jemima James & Michael Mason, showcases a stellar cast of talented musicians including Willy Mason on vocals and acoustic guitar, Brendan Benson with background vocals and guitalele, Nina Violet with background vocals and viola, Jared Green on acoustic guitar, Ben Plasse on upright bass, Ian Craft on mandolin, Brad Pemberton on table, case and bells, and Andrew Higley on the pump organ.
Available at all good independent retailers on Record Store Day on April 20, Upstairs At United Vol. 7 is a unique project and a standout release befitting of the special nature of RSD.
Willy Mason returns to the UK for festival shows this summer including appearances at Glastonbury, Latitude and Cambridge Folk Festival date amongst many others.
