THE Red Hot Chili Peppers lead the nominations for this year’s MTV Video Music Awards along with Colombian-born singer Shakira.

Both acts have seven nominations each, while Madonna and punk quartet Panic! At The Disco have five nods. UK singer James Blunt is in the running for best male video.

The nominations were announced on Tuesday, August 1, 2006 and will be presented in New York on August 31.

The Chili Peppers’ comeback single Dani California and Shakira’s Hips Don’t Lie have both been nominated for video of the year, along with Madonna’s Hung Up, Christina Aguilera’s Ain’t No Other Man and Panic! At The Disco’s I Write Sins Not Tragedies.

James Blunt is competing against Kanye West, Busta Rhymes, TI and Nick Lachey in the best male video category for his single You’re Beautiful. Kanye West’s Gold Digger, featuring Jamie Foxx, is the favourite.

The best female video category will be competed by Kelly Clarkson, Nelly Furtado, Madonna, Aguilera and Shakira, while the best group video is between the All-American Rejects, Fall Out Boy, Gnarls Barkley, Panic! At The Disco and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
