Richard Thompson's Meltdown: Line-up announced

Paolo Nutini

Story by Jack Foley

THE line-up for Richard Thompson’s Meltdown at London’s Southbank Centre has just been announced.

This year’s event takes place between June 11 and 21, 2010, and includes performances from Paolo Nutini (pictured), Rufus Wainwright, Codeine Velvet Club, Elvis Costello and Broken Bells.

One of the biggest highlights, however, comes in the form of a tribute concert for Kate McGarrigle – the mother of Rufus and Martha Wainwright.

McGarrigle, who died in January, was a renowned folk singer best known for performing with her sister, Anna, and both Rufus and Martha will be joined by the likes of Lisa Hannigan, Emmylou Harris and Beth Orton in paying tribute to her memory. The gig takes place on June 12.

Other notable events include the premiere of Richard Thompson’s Cabaret Of Souls, a musical chronicle of a talent contest set in hell, and “an evening of political song” featuring protest songs performed by Tom Robinson, Jez Lowe, Eliza Carthy and Martin Carthy.

This year’s Meltdown is being curated by folk veteran Richard Thompson.
