Rodrigo y Gabriela - Live In Japan

Rodrigo Y Gabriela, Live In Mexico

Review by Jack Foley

IndieLondon Rating: 4 out of 5

MEXICAN acoustic rock duo Rodrigo y Gabriela’s eagerly anticipated Live In Japan lives up to expectation, serving as a fantastic showcase of their undeniable brilliance.

Coming complete with a bonus live DVD, the album captures Rod and Gab making their live Japanese debut at Tokyo’s Duo club on March 30 this year (2008).

The show had been sold out for weeks, such was the level of anticipation from their Far East fanbase, and Live In Japan expertly mixes tracks from Rodrigo y Gabriela’s half a million selling, self-titled third album with older live favourites. There’s even a new track, OK Tokyo, as well as Rod and Gab’s legendary solo jams recorded for the first time.

The album is being released as a limited edition by Rubyworks, so their fans do not have to shell out for high price Japanese imports.

Highlights include album opener Ok Tokyo, which immediately whips the crowd into an appreciative frenzy, as well as their long-time favourites, Foc and Ixtapa.

They save the best for last, of course… with a pre-encore showcasing their sublime version of Stairway To Heaven, the odd teaser taster of other contemporary hits such as The White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army and a blast of Hendrix, and a rousing, crowd-pleasing final blast of Tamacun, which really does showcase their virtuosity.

For those that don’t know, Rodrigo Y Gabriela have been a word-of-mouth phenomenon ever since 2006 thanks to their mesmerising live shows and charisma.

They released the eponymous debut LP in Ireland in February 2006 and have since sold over 500,000 copies of the album worldwide.

The good news is that they are currently writing songs for their next studio album at their base in Ixtapa, Mexico. We can’t wait… but in the meantime, Live In Mexico serves as an excellent reminder of their enormous ability.
