Ryan Adams & The Cardinals - Everybody Knows EP

Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, Everybody Knows EP

Review by Jack Foley

IndieLondon Rating: 3 out of 5

MOST EPs range from five to six songs – so trust Ryan Adams, one of the most hard working artists of the moment, to put out an EP featuring no less than eight!

Everybody Knows is a collection of songs by Adams and The Cardinals that’s been issued on digi-pack CD to coincide with the forthcoming tour.

As well as the title track, which is taken from the Easy Tiger album, the EP consists of two new tracks, Follow The Lights and My Love For You Is Real, which will be featured in the US TV Drama October Road.

Follow The Lights is tender, folksy offering with country influences that finds Adams at his most serene and evocative. Lyrically, it’s rich with imagery and seems perfectly suited to provide a backdrop to a moving image. Likewise, My Love For You Is Real, a slightly more upbeat ballad that once again flirts with some country tendencies.

Also on the EP is Blue Hotel, a song originally written for Willie Nelson’s Songbird album that really embraces a country sound; and the equally brooding Down In The Hole, which is another of the EP highlights and a cover of the Alice In Chains classic.

This Is It is slightly more upbeat but not really a standout, while the final two tracks are live versions of Dear John and If I Am A Stranger, both of which slow down the tempo and sound almost melancholy.

It’s an accomplished, intelligent selection but at times it had me pining for something a little more upbeat and positive (particularly towards the end).

For fans, it’s a treat before the next album. But it begins much stronger than it ends.
