Shawn Mendes and Stormzy win big at MTV Europe Music Awards (2017)

Story by Jack Foley

CANADIAN singer Shawn Mendes and UK grime artist Stormzy were among the big winners at the MTV Europe Music Awards (2017).

Mendes beat Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran to scoop the best artist prize, while also picking up two more awards on the night: for best song and the biggest fans.

Stormzy, meanwhile, took home the best act for the UK and Ireland.

This year’s MTV Awards were held at The SSE Arena, Wembley, in London – marking the first time the ceremony had taken place in the capital in 21 years.

Also flying the flag for Britain was Ed Sheeran, who won best live act, and Coldplay, who took home best rock act.

Other winners on the night were Dua Lipa, who won best new act, Camila Cabello, who scooped best pop and Eminem who won best hip hop.

Going into the ceremony, Taylor Swift had led the list of nominations, with six nods, but the singer left empty-handed after failing to win any.

The awards were hosted by Rita Ora who turned up wearing a dressing gown – complete with a towel on her head.
