Sia - Lady Croissant

Sia, Lady Croissant

Review by Jack Foley

IndieLondon Rating: 4 out of 5

SIA Furler is, of course, the popular voice behind many of Zero 7’s greatest hits – not to mention an accomplished solo performer in her own right.

Credited with possessing a voice to send shivers down the spine and knees trembling, she’s a rare talent whose outwardly summery demeanour on stage belies a great deal of tragedy in her personal life (most notably, the death of her “first true love” in an accident involving a black cab).

But having pulled herself together following that tragedy, Sia is back doing what she loves and infecting the hearts and minds of countless listeners with her intoxicating singing.

Lady Croissant is an album of mostly live songs recorded at the Bowery Ballroom in New York. It features tracks from both Sia and Zero 7 catalogues and perfectly showcases the stunning power of her vocal delivery.

Highlights include Destiny, a stripped down version of one of Zero 7’s most popular efforts that’s achingly tender, a stunning version of Breathe Me, one of the undisputed highlights of Sia’s solo Colour The Small One LP and I Go To Sleep, a classy cover version of The Pretenders classic that’s delivered with positive relish.

Numb, too, drips with the vulnerability so often exhibited in Sia’s delicious vocals, providing a nie counter-balance to some of her more happy offerings.

And a deeply romantic, strings-laden take on Zero 7’s Distractions draws the album to a truly seductive close (particularly when Sia croons “I love you” over and over again”).

New track Pictures, the only studio recording on the album (which ironically kicks things in motion), also succeeds in whetting the appetite for future material currently being recorded in LA for release this coming autumn.

It’s a lush, melodic track that features some breezy melodies and idyllic vocals destined to ease you into a great mood whenever you hear it. It’s already had over 5 million plays on her MySpace site since being released digitally.

In short, Lady Croissant offers a stunning reminder of why Sia Furler remains one of the classiest female vocalists performing her craft today.
