Stephen Gately died of natural causes, says court official

Stephen Gateley

Story by Jack Foley

LATE Boyzone singer Stephen Gately died of natural causes, a post mortem has revealed.

A Spanish court official said that the 33-year-old star had suffered a pulmonary oedema, which is an accumulation of fluid on the lungs. He was found dead at his holiday home in Majorca on Saturday (October 10, 2009).

She added that the pulmonary oedema had been “acute” and said that once the witness statements and tests are confirmed then the “case will be closed”.

However, she could not say whether Gately had consumed any drugs or alcohol beforehand – although they were not the cause of death.

A sample of fluid taken during the post mortem exam will now be sent to a forensic lab in Barcelona for further tests to confirm the result.

But a judge has since authorised Gately’s civil partner Andrew Cowles and family to take his body home to Ireland so that funeral arrangements can be made.

It is believed that Gately died after falling asleep on a sofa after a night out in the city of Palma. Police said there were “no signs of suspicious circumstances”.
